What themes and topics are included in AFAN?

The AFAN project is currently at the pilot stage. The AFAN group have written material and selected texts and visual materials on 3 initial topics – Death and Life, Religion and Violence, and Freedom and Authority15 topics and further supporting material for these subjects will be added during the year.


How does the Website Work

The main part of the site stuff works via a tagging system, which means that each piece of information has a label based on a theme - wordview and what information it might contain eg. Death Hindu Visuals - have a look here.


AFAN is not a research project, nor a factory for the development of teaching materials. Nor is it a government-inspired conspiracy to domesticate religions into constrained patterns. Religion and spirituality are the realms where young (and old) can explore faith and values – and can encounter the ‘Other’ – the domain of mystery, of depth, of the transcendent – where they can be in touch with that which exceeds everyday material life. They also give meaning to concepts such as death and life and can engender and illuminate the values and precepts by which we live. It has primary focus is students between 16-19 attending further education colleges in England.

What is the aim of AFAN?

The aim of the AFAN methodology is to support students both in engaging with a plural society, through better understanding of the main religious and non-religious traditions in British Society, and in developing a sense of meaning and purpose, and values which enable them to function positively in such a society. In other words, the aim is about transferring a methodology of participants engaging with each others’ faiths and beliefs, not about developing specific courses. Support materials are designed to help teachers to put the methodology into practice.

What is the AFAN Methodology?

The AFAN Methodology is a collaborative process between people from different religious and non-religious traditions, examining their own and other traditions’ and worldviews, with a view to identifying and exploring common themes, sharing values and mutual understandings across faith and non-faith positions – as well as differences. The underlying assumptions are that in a modern plural society young people are entitled to an education which gives them the opportunity to experience the range of religious and non-religious traditions in society. Such opportunities are necessary to help develop the shared values and understanding necessary to a cohesive society.

Who is using AFAN?

Several colleges in different parts of England are involved (eg London, Midlands, Manchester, North East, Bristol etc and will be trialling the AFAN materials and methodology as part of the development process of the project from September 2008.


Who is behind AFAN?

AFAN is a joint project between churches, faith communities, fbfe (the National Council of Faiths and Beliefs in FE), and the British Humanist Association. Contributors from six key faith communities have been involved in the initial development process (2007-8) – Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh.The project is funded by the Learning and Skills Council and the Jerusalem Trust.
