AFAN becomes member of Religious Education Council - talk given by Minster of state schools

Today I attended along with Alan Murray, the http://www.religiouseducationcouncil.org/    AGM and we were approved for council membership. As part of the AGM Nick Gibb the Minster for state Schools gave a talk. It was a talk filled with statistics, of how students do, where we rate with other countries. Did you know China does better than us at mathematics. Although a beautiful crafted talk, it was all about knowledge, facts and getting the best results. What is the purpose of education?

A few Signs on the way - Gloucester uni and college

Strangely this time last year I blogged about some of the signs I see on my travels http://www.afan.uk.net/afanblog/few-signs-way-march-2011. Yesterday I went to Gloucester University to speak with trainee religious education teachers. It was lovely session where we explored some of the more difficult concepts in Buddhism and how to make them practical for young people.

Why do so many music videos portray women as objects? Have we got so used it we don't notice any more? Ever seen groupies used as furniture?

In priase of Hippy teaching methods

A few weeks  I was walking past a tube station on the way to a AFAN CPD session, when a economist giveaway was thrown into my hand. I looked through and found a very interesting article called"in praise of hippy teaching method." Its resonants with me, because it how I see the AFAN methodology, experienced based on one hand and kownledge driven on the other. You can read the article on line at http://www.economist.com/node/18678925 . As You will see from the comments nothing is new!

Occupy London - St Pauls Interfaith and Meditation Tent

Yesterday after seeing the Hugging mother - Amma - see my previous blog. I went to St Pauls Cathedral to see the Occupy London scene. I found a interfaith and Meditation tent and sat there for a hour in front of Buddha with a cross in its lap. I had been given some food when I was at Amma's and there was a notice they need some food so I shared what food I had with them.

Amma - The hugging Mother

Yesterday I went to Alexander Palace not to go to the Ice rink but to get a hug from Amma, a Indian spiritual leader. As I sat on the train I was suprised to see a article in the metro about Amma. http://www.metro.co.uk/news/881872-hugging-saint-to-embrace-hundreds-at-... . Its a very siple experience, you queue up for a token, you wait in line, you bend down in front her, you put your head on her shoulder and she hugs you. Whilst I was ther, she must of hugged at least a thousand people, and probably over her life time millions.
